Revolts and popular mobilisations in the Rif: from Abdelkrim to Hirak

Abstract
In this article we propose the application of a diachronic perspective for the understanding and comparison of the political revolts and social mobilizations that have taken place in the Rif throughout the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century. This approach serves as a starting analytical framework for the various articles that make up this monograph. We point to the existence of three major cycles of protest: a first cycle of anti-colonial revolts, a second cycle of revolts under the new independent state and a third cycle of revolts under the neo-liberal era. In this complex panorama of tension between the local populations and the central structures of the state, colonial and post-colonial, we highlight the differential elements of these three major phases following the theory of cycles of revolt, but we also highlight the continuities between the different mobilizations in this peripheral and marginalised region. Abdelkrim's role in Rifian memory and his rallying power in the more recent 20-F and Hirak protests exemplifies the complex interactions between the different cycles.
