Abstract

In this article the authors provide an overview of the National Exam of Secondary Education (ENEM) in Brazil and present the main results that were obtained by candidates in the objective and dissertation tests in 2005. A special emphasis is given to the construction and interpretation of candidates proficiency scale. Examples of items anchor are also included to establish the relationship between candidates ability and its measurement. The authors present and discuss exam means and the distribution of candidates performance by proficiency scale levels: insufficient to regular, regular to good, good to excellent. Finally a summary of relationship between social economic variables and candidates performance is added.
