The goal of this paper is to analyze the role played by definitions in the argumentative process. For that reason, different examples of written texts and discussions will be taken to identify the factors that motivate the use of definitions. Previously, some historical background will be reviewed; particularly, it will argue with Karl R. Popper’s stance, who argues that the discussion of definitions is a useless activity for philosophy and other disciplines.
