Abstract
The Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962) continues to provide an opportunity to analyse one of the most brutal episodes of decolonisation in the twentieth century. Raphaelle Branche's new book offers a new perspective, based on family relationships and the way French soldiers socialised with their friends, to illustrate how silence and trauma shaped an entire generation and its descendants.
