Resumen
La educación secundaria en México se define como el último tramo de la enseñanza básica obligatoria, la cual está conformada por los niveles de preescolar (3 a 5 años), primaria (6 a 11 años) y secundaria (12 a 15 años). El propósito de este artículo es en primer término mostrar algunos rasgos del desarrollo histórico y la evolución cuantitativa que ha tenido la educación secundaria mexicana y, en segundo lugar, plantear las premisas y propuestas generales que la política educativa ha formulado para llevar a cabo una reforma integral de este nivel educativo. Se destacan primordialmente las dificultades que esta tarea enfrenta no sólo en el plano del diseño de la reforma, sino y sobre todo las que se advierten para su implantación y desarrollo futuro.

Secondary Education in México: at the cutting edge of its reform
Secondary education in Mexico is defined as the last section of basic obligatory education. It is conformed by 3 levels: preschool (3-5 years old), primary education (6-11 years old) and secondary education (12-15 years old). The purpose of this article is in the first place, to show some of the aspects of the historical development and the quantitative evolution that the Mexican secondary school has suffered. On the other hand, it is to raise the premises and general offers that the educational politics have formulated to carry out an integral reform for this educational level. Basically, the difficulties this task faces are outlined, not only in the designing of the reform -but and mostly- those advertised for its implantation and future development.
