Abstract
The aim of this work is to evaluate and to explore the role of fish in the diet of Amazonian horticulturalists of the Tupiguaraní Tradition. We analyze fish remains recovered at Arroyo Fredes (Partido de San Fernando, Buenos Aires, Argentina), a site located in the insular area of the lower Paraná wetland, dated 556-894 cal. years BP. We assess the natural and cultural processes involved in the formation of the assemblage. Besides anatomical and taxonomic abundance indices, we discuss prey sizes and processing methods. On the basis of these data, we suggest that fish were a dietary complement to other sources of animal protein and plant foods.
