Abstract

Improving human condition can be a dream or a nightmare. Current techniques, especially pharmacological ones, which are beginning to become available, raise important ethical problems. Many of their promises force us to think about whether it is desirable to reach the goal of the posthuman, a sort of improved human whose characteristics are so far removed from the existing human that it is practically unimaginable. The question is whether there is a single model of improvement, whether we are seeking to alter our capacities to achieve new accomplishments or whether we are aspiring to configure a new way of being, if by doing so we will generate greater inequalities and injustices. The analysis of the arguments of this debate is the object of this text whose conclusion cannot be other than the call for responsibility in decisions about our future as human beings.
