Abstract

In 1969 decolonization was an ongoing process that had already given rise to numerous independent states. And young historians, outside and inside the continent, worked with enthusiasm to offer an "African history" far from the Hegelian and Eurocentric budgets that had denied, in previous decades, the historicity of the populations south of the Sahara. It was a time of "nation-building", and stories had to be provided where Africans seemed like protagonists, makers of states and commercial systems, and not merely victims or elements of the landscape.
