The Cuban writer Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda is a reference in the Romantic literature of the New World. Its mandatory reading and study is as certain as the transgression of this precept, which entails the concealment of one of the most distinguished minds of Latin American literature in the 19th century. The author participates in different generic molds in her works, and some of her compositions have already been discussed, such as the anti-slavery novel Sab or the historical Guatimozin. This paper analyzes the literary treatment of the slave in Sab and how it serves to exemplify the author’s ideological model on minorities (slaves, women), valuing to what extent it contributes not only to growth of a writer who should be in the literary canon, but to the awareness of these realities in the Hispanic American panorama.
