Heroic Pathos in the Philosophy of Early Modernity: A Blumenbergian Reading from the Concept of Absolutism of Reality

Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to show that the claim to dominate and control reality that characterizes the early modern philosophy, obeys to a certain ‘heroic’ disposition present in the premises suggested by thinkers of the importance of Nicolás Copernicus, Francis Bacon, or René Descartes, among others. For these philosophers, the proper matter of thinking should lead unequivocally to the unveiling of an irrefutable truth. However, this paper defends the idea that the ‘heroism’ present in the early modern philosophy responds to the need to affirm human existence against what Blumenberg calls Absolutismus der Wirklichkeit. In this way, contrary to the presumption of having revealed the arché of the cosmos expressed in the mathematization of the world, the knowledge produced by the European philosophy of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries can be understood as a form of mediation with being, whose limits do not fall on the attributes of the object, but on the human possibilities of relationship and understanding of the reality.
