Abstract

Abstract: The traditional paternalistic system in the relationship between doctor and patient has already been overcome with the triumph of the patient´s principle of autonomy. Concerning the health care field, the patient's dignity should be reflected in the respect for the autonomy. There are two instruments in the health care regulation that protects the patient´s autonomy: the informed consent and the advance directives. The Law 41/2002, November 14th, about patient´s autonomy and rights and obligations of information and clinical documentation; expresses these two instruments.
