Jovellanos and Ceán Bermúdez, toward a History of the Arts in Spain

Abstract

This article presents an unpublished letter which sheds light on the close collaboration between Gaspar melchor de Jovellanos and Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez, and is particularly significant for the historiographical works of the latter. despite the fact that the suggestions and information sent to Ceán are well-known, this letter reflects the involvement of Jovellanos in the Noticias de los arquitectos y arquitectura de España desde su Restauración as part of a global project which made it possible for an artistic literature, at the height of the Spanish artistic heritage, to develop.
