Abstract
Focusing on a well-kown literary anecdote in Palomino’s life of Herrera the Younger, this article analyzes the satirical image of the ape whose meaning refers to the excesses of the servile imitation and claims for painting as an speculative science that uses laughter to vindicate itself.
