Abstract

The Premonstratense Order is a religious congregation formed by regular canons and founded in the XII Century by San Norberto. Probably, the fact that it disappeared in Spain, at least their male monasteries, after the de-depreciation in 1835, has induce, among others, a general unknowledgement of itself, in both its history and its monastery architecture. This work follows the revision of the premonstratense historiography in order to count with a base which allows the review of the meaning that the order had in the Spanish medieval monastic architecture- with foundations like Retuerta, Aguilar de Campóo, Urdax and Bellpuig de las Avellanas, and make the difference between its artistic expressions and the ones of their cistercience brothers. Granted that the most of the preserved premonstratense buildings correspond to romanic and gothic works, in this article priority has been given to the bibliography dedicated to both high and low medieval periods.
