Abstract
This study aims to define the personality of the painter Francisco Zorilla (Haro, 1679 -1747) as much as it is possible. To do so, it gathers together all the documents that have been published to date and reveals other unpublished materials that provide essential clues to the painter's roots, personality and art. It is also a study on his known works as well as his new contributions to art, some of them of capital importance, which still remain to be studied within their appropriate historical and artistic contexts despite having been mentioned in the local bibliography on La Rioja. The role Zorilla played in the artistic circles of Madrid during the reign of Philip V and his late contribution to Baroque painting in La Rioja are assessed through two important decorative set pieces like the sacristy (1742) and dome (1745) of the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Vega de Haro (La Rioja) located in the painter's native city. After abandoning Madrid, Zorilla returned to Haro, where he finally died in 1747.
