Abstract

The concept of identity and its reconstruction has been misplaced in the periphery of International Relations mainstream. Therefore, the rise of new powers in the international system has been analyzed from a materialistic view and usually portrayed as a threat to the stability of the whole system. In particular, China’s rise is accompanied by speeches of threat that reconstruct the otherness between China and the US in demonizing terms. Therefore, it is essential to analyze this phenomenon from theories that include identity variables to move towards the deconstruction of such dangerous speeches.
