Abstract

The following article carries out a literature review of the works focused on the AKP´s foreign policy in the period 2002-2022 in order to frame the content of the special issue "Turkey: repertoires of cooperation and conflict in the Eastern Mediterranean and the MENA Region".

This special issue focuses on Turkey's foreign policy repertoires, especially, but not only, during contentious episodes with third states. With the aim of framing the bilateral relations under analysis, this article presents the main trends in Turkish foreign policy in recent years, with which to frame and explain the context in which these relations will take place, as well as the use of different tools of political power in the international arena.

This comprehensive vision allows us to delve into the direction and scope of the bilateral and multilateral relations of Turkey that have undergone substantial transformations in recent years. The article focuses on the texts that have proposed a periodization of the AKP´s foreign policy and outlines in detail the genesis and the debate around the concepts of neo-Ottomanism and Eurasianism commonly used to explain key and recent moments of Turkish foreign policy. The article includes a last section dedicated to the tools of hard power, soft power and coercive diplomacy used by the ruling party in power.
