Abstract
Chej Mae el Aînin has been an important figure in the history of the Maghreb. Its influence on the Saharan kabyles allowed him to maintain privileged relations with the Moroccan sultans. They understood soon the role that could play Chej Maelainin in these remote regions on their behalf. He was the man in the Sahara in a political system in which power is maintained due to the trust relationships of Chej Maelainin. But the benefits were not unidirectional as the chej was able to extend their religious influence to all the empire through the generosity of the sultans.
