La carne de René (1952), de Virgilio Piñera, es una de las obras en las que el escritor cubano desarrolla más ampliamente su crítica de las identidades masculinas. La novela, que narra la transición a la adultez de un joven excéntrico en el contexto opresivo del patriarcado latinoamericano de mediados del siglo XX, explora el complejo entramado en el que confluyen la configuración de dichas masculinidades, la omnipresencia de la violencia y los intereses del capital. En el presente ensayo me propongo analizar estas relaciones y el papel del espacio urbano en el moldeado de lo masculino en la obra.
