Although, in the realm of painting the seventeenth century was an age of great
contrasts, a number of commonplaces and stereotypes regarding painters’ production

and clienteles have overshadowed other realities which need to be taken into account
in order to gain a more complete, richer, and perhaps less “brilliant” vision of what is
called the Golden Age of Spanish Painting. This becomes especially evident when
one analyses the work of painters in the so-called minor centers of production. This
essay examines the case of Toledo, and looks at different aspects of the work of the
painters there, and the great variety of pictures they carried out in order to satisfy the
needs of the local clientele. This shows how the existence of a strong private demand
for paintings became the fundamental support for the activity of many artists and gave
rise to the production of a considerable range of profane works. Private individuals
acquired paintings from artists’ workshops and local shops, and, from what can be seen
from inventories of people’s possessions, they did not limit themselves to acquiring
devotional works. Their homes were full of portraits, landscapes, still-life paintings, flower
pictures, seascapes, and battle scenes, all of which were regarded as important
elements of household furniture, and sometimes even amounted to actual picture
collections. This fact is a clear indicator that, if although it has been traditionally
considered that the pictorial production of the Spanish masters of the seventeenth
century was mainly religious, it is because many of the works of art that were actually in
private ownership have disappeared; it is likely that if these had been conserved, we
would have a very different vision of the history of painting in the Golden Age.
