[SPA] LOS VIRREINATOS AMERICANOS: IMAGEN, CORTES Y GESTIÓN DE LA DISTANCIA // THE SPANISH AMERICAN VICEROYALTIES: IMAGE, COURTS, AND GOVERNANCE AT A DISTANCE

Resumen

Hasta fechas recientes, ha sido complicado ofrecer una perspectiva global e
integrada de las posesiones ultramarinas de los Austrias. A esta tardanza ha
contribuido la tradicional compartimentación académica entre historia de España y de
América, así como la consolidación de historiografías nacionales fragmentadas en
cada una de las nuevas repúblicas americanas. La pujanza en bastantes partes del
continente de una historia socioeconómica que desdeña la dimensión política ha
reforzado esta tendencia. Esta imagen del “coloniaje”, de América como excepción
exótica que se inicia en el “se obedece, pero no se cumple” y llega al realismo mágico,
ha ocultado las muchas concomitancias de su modelo político con el del Viejo Mundo,
o al menos que se encaraban cuestiones muy semejantes. Sin negar las muchas
especificidades americanas, valoraremos la aplicación del modelo virreinal, sus
límites y reacomodos, en comparación con otras áreas de la Monarquía hispana en
los siglos XVI y XVII.

Until recently, it has been difficult to establish a global and unified perspective
for the Habsburgs’ overseas possessions. Such a delay can be explained by the
traditional academic separation between Spanish and American history, reinforced by
the consolidation of isolated national historiographies in every new American republic.
This tendency has been reinforced by the dominance, in several American traditions,
of a socioeconomic history which scorns the political dimension. This colonial picture
of America as an exotic exception, based on the motto “it is obeyed, but not fulfilled”,
and extending in time up to the phenomenon of literary magic realism, has obscured the many parallels which exist between political models on either side of the Atlantic.

Without denying the many specific American trends which can be identified, this essay
considers the applicability of the viceregal model, its limits and reassessments, in
comparison with other areas of the Spanish Monarchy throughout the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries.
