THE RIGHT TO EDUCATION AND THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE, OR EDUCATION IN THE SERVICE OF A POLITICAL PROJECT

The Council of Europe attaches great importance to the right to education, which is essentially part of a political project: to consolidate democracy by training young people in European humanist culture. The right to education is thus at the heart of the political project of the Council of Europe, which was created in the aftermath of the Second World War to prevent a return to barbarism and totalitarianism by cultivating links between peoples and by contributing to the understanding of all Europeans that they belong to the same continent, that they share the same history and culture, and that the differences between peoples must be understood as a source of wealth and not as factors of disunity. Education is thus understood by the Council of Europe as a tool for transmitting and sharing a common culture for the formation of a common future.
