Abstract
The icons of the so called "proto-cuneiform" texts from Uruk IV/II are strong polysemic; so were also the icons of the archaic Chinese writing. But the development of purely (morpho-)phonemic values peculiar to the earliest Mesopotamian scripts has no parallels in Early China. The comparison of the writing technology in both Old Mesopotamian and Archaic China shows the existence of two different cultural competences mainly with regard to the conscience of linguistic diversity and of social plurality.
