Abstract: The chronology of the earliest stages of the Iron Age in the Mediterranean is a problematic issue. The reasons are manifold, but they boil down to an unbalanced use of the three main sources of information – ancient texts, material culture sequences and 14C dating – and the well-known ‘circular reasoning’. Both factors are the consequence of firmly established a priori positions, which have led to several trends of chronological interpretation, the occasional lack of rigor in the use of references, including the unawareness of their nature and evolution, or a recent abuse of 14C determinations, including certain statistic approaches – such as Bayesian statistics– that include aprioristic constraints in the analysis. The aim of this article is to review the essence of the problem, focusing especially on the need for chronological coherence, as well as on the consequences of depending on the ancient texts or 14C determinations without taking into account the material culture and its evolution.

Keywords: Mediterranean Iron Age, metropolitan Phoenicia, Phoenician colonies, chronology, 14C, pottery sequence.
