Abstract

Environmental restoration of the coastal dune is one of the most important procedures for the conservation of the dune system in the Special Natural Reserve of  Dunas de Maspalomas (from this point referred to as RNEDM). Masdunas project, developed by the Council of Gran Canaria, is born with the objective of searching for adequate ways of halting the environmental degradation process befalling the dune system for the last 50 years as consequence of the disruptive use of its resources. In order to rewild the coastal dune (foredune) various operations have been set in motion: 1. Spatial delimitation and follow-up of protection plots for balancones. 2.  Preparation of sand collectors (structures devised to round up sand), which are responsable for the formation of mound dunes (nebkhas). 3. Removal of pressure sources that afflict the natural sedimentary dynamic. The scientific follow-up results have established clear directives for improving the management of this protected space.
