Abstract

 he idea to set up a plant micro-reserves (PMR) network arose in the Valencian Community (Spain) in 1989, being carried out since 1993 thanks to the LIFE program of the European Union. Nowadays, this network comprises 312 PMR (2.468 ha), harbouring not less than 28.032 populations of 2,036 species (58.3 % of the Valencian vascular flora). The project of the Valencian PMRs has been exported to several European regions and countries, inspiring the establishment of similar figures enlarged to wild fauna and other natural elements.
