Abstract

On the bicentennial of the Constitution of 1812, this paper is intended to make an overall assessment of its meaning and scope as the highest expression of values, principles and political ideals of contemporary Spain. The legal and political principles constitutionalized in Cadiz, among which that of national sovereignty, separation of powers, the protection of individual rights and freedoms and equality of all before the law, expressing the philosophy of modern natural law and the liberal revolution, but while trying to connect with the most democratic and liberal political Hispanic tradition. Therefore, in the history of freedom, democracy and human rights in our country, the Constitution of Cadiz will always be a key milestone.
