Abstract

Hobbes championed a concept offreedom as non-arbitrariness. This claim challenges a dominant interpretation that reads Hobbes as elaborating a concept of political liberty understood merely as absence of interference. But this accounts only for natural, not political freedom. The article thus contributes to clarify the potential of Hobbes’ theory with regard to the role the State must play in guaranteeing that individuals may lead lives not only without interferences, but lives not subject to arbitrary changes. Moreover, it contributes to specify the contours of the liberal and republican traditions.
