Abstract
Spinoza’s doctrine of infinite modes is
one of the most original and difficult of
the Ethics. Because of this difficulty, it
was thought that the absolutely infinite
Being (God or substance) must pass
through different moments to produce,
finally, finite singular things. That is, it
was thought that between the absolutely
infinite substance and finite things
an emanantist mediation is interposed,
which is effected precisely by the infinite
modes, thus guaranteeing the continuity
and indivisibility of the infinite. However,
this is far from Spinoza’s ultimate
intention. To demonstrate this, we will
study the nature, function and temporality
of the infinite modes, and their relation
to the finite modes, according to
Spinoza.
