Abstract

A Johannes Sadeler engraving after a painting by the Flemish artist Pieter de Witte -or Pietro Candido as he was known in Italy- has made known at least four versions of the aforesaid painting, and we are probably in presence of the original one. On the other hand, an extremely beautiful painting commonly attributed to Pedro de Campaña seems to be -and so we are trying to demonstrate- a work of Denis Calvaert, a Flemish painter living in Bolonia, whose works and theories were conclusive during the first Bolognese baroque period. Likewise, an enigmatic painting, by Calvaert for all we know, presumably represents "Saint John With Veronica's cloth".
