Abstract
It is known that Wölfflin's production is not only an important reference in Gombrich's development writings but it also appears to be the object of a very conclusive criticism. Gombrich emphasizes the autonomous evolution of artistic problems began by Wölfflin and he even explains some constant characteristics of formal behaviour postulated by the author of Kunstgeschichtliche grundbegriffe. They both take psychology of perception as a starting point. In any case, this science has witnessed an extraordinary growth in this century and has proven the necessity to revise, among other things, the criteria to interpret artistic styles deriving from 19th century empathy psychology. Gombrich's biological anthropology has established the basis for a more adequate evaluation in style/expression relationship.
