Abstract

The building of the altar-piece and the tombs of San Lorenzo el Real del Escorial was one of the major artistic enterprise of the XVIth Century in Europe. Juan de Herrera designed it, and Pompeo Leoni did the sculptures. The best European artists were found in Spain. Italy and Flandes to perform it. The final result was a masterpiece.
