Abstract
The study of the life and work of the painter Nicolás Antonio de la Cuadra (San Julián de Musquiz, 1663 - Bilbao, 1728) reveals the apprenticeship of some painters born out of the Court and their late return to their place of origin. That is one way of diffusion of the style and forms from the Madrid school of Baroque painting. In the case of Nicolás Antonio de la Cuadra, after learning the way of painting in Madrid, his destiny was the city of Bilbao and its environs, where he developed an important work as a painter and as an arts dealer. We have preserved an important number of his works and we can study his personality because most of them are signed usually.
