Abstract

Until now, the painter Rodrigo de Villandrando (c. 1588-1622) has been mainly known by two portraits by his hand kept in Prado Museum, and for being Velázquez's predecessor in the job of Royal Painter. Starting from a deep analysis of the documentation of the Court, and the contribution of new facts about his life and his work, we will try to reconstruct the artist's biography and to settle his link with the Court, as well as the importance of his death in the appointment of Velázquez as Royal Painter.
