Abstract
The main courtyard of the St. Ildefonso College of the University of Alcalá de Henares, today called St. Tomás de Villanueva courtyard, is attributed to the royal architect Juan Gómez de Mora. This particular is justified by a lost design he drew in 1614 for the reconstruction of the original courtyard, center of the academic institution since its foundation by Cardinal Ximenez at the beginning of the XVI Century. Today we know that Gómez de Mora's project was never issued because the actual designer and builder of the courtyard was the little known master José de Sopeña, who since 1656 to 1670 built it based in his own design.
