Abstract

Serlio, may be the last definer of the classic orders system, which later will crystallize Viñola. He was, by far, the most important one between the theoretical systems of architecture that carne to the Viceroyalty of the New Spain along his existence. But, after taking a look to the buildings in this period can we speak really about a theoretical system of architecture? In this article we expect to be able to throw some light on the opposition of two different forms of understanding the world of architecture in New Spain: the written statement, the theoretical texts that arrived to the viceroyalty; and the works constructed definitively. This article will study Serlio's remainss in New Spain. By presenting these sources we expect to be able to show the different uses and types of receipt that the viceregal architecture had with Serlio's work.
