Abstract

The actual research puts forth a reflection about a Middle Age epidemic, the ergotism, known through different terms, and the reflex in the medieval art. The St. Martial's Fire denomination had two penetration pathways: through the path of Saint James and thanks to the Grandmont Order stablishment in Spanish land, brought about Teobald II of Navarra. With this term is designated in several Cantigas of Alfonso X the Wise, which take into account events in French sanctuaries. Only in one case, the action happens in Spanish land, but is unknown the legend origin in which is inspired. In these episodes, curiously, is to the Virgin to where it turns to beg for recovery and not to San Martial. The name St. Anthony's Fire, the same as the previous case, is linked to extraordinary events, brought about the corresponding saint relics. Nevertheless, the expansion and reflect in the artistic world seems to have been broader. Without any doubt, in a special way the creation of the Antoninos order and their hospitable capacity contributed.
