SILENCE AND FREEDOM IN THE READER BY BERNHARD SCHLINK: THE DILEMMAS OF THE ENLIGHTENMENT

Abstract
This article seeks an interpretation, in the conceptual light of the German Enlightenment rationalism, of the ethical and political dilemmas exposed in the novel The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. Reason, freedom, justice, within the framework of these great problems of enlightened modernity, there is an attempt to interpret the moral problems that appear in the novel: shame, guilt and silence, the intergenerational relationship in the postwar period, love, responsibility, and freedom, the mature perspective of a story that goes through several stages of life. Hence, this article, rather than a literary analysis, links political philosophy, morality and ethics with the literary work of Schlink.
