Abstract

Decision-making in conservation is built, supported, and defended from the critical development and use of theories, knowledges, and methodological procedures. Here, a methodology for the conservation decision-making is proposed emphasizing that materiality is determined by historical-cultural contexts, that the transmission of the messages contained in the objects depends on the state of conservation of its materials, and considering the involved parties, the knowledge, and resources available.
This methodology integrates elements of Appelbaum’s proposal (2007), the discrepancy model (SBMK 1999) and the experience obtained in the restoration of the monumental equestrian statue El Caballito, conducted in 2016 and 2017, and which is used to explain it.
In this methodological proposal, technological choices and chaînes opératoires are used as heuristic tools for the comprehensive understanding of the objects; to understand their production, social life and later their conservation decision-making.
