Restoration and conservation of a set of coins (La Bienvenida)

Abstract

This article deals with the intervention on a set of copper-based coins from the site of La Bienvenida
(Almodóvar del Campo, Ciudad Real). The intervention consisted of the conservation, restoration and numismatic documentation of all the pieces that make up the set. A specific methodology was used to guarantee the preservation of the material and to obtain epigraphic information. The most difficult part is the cleaning of the coins, due to the risk that this entails for their physical structure, so a previous study and analysis of the deterioration process of each coin was carried out. This preliminary analysis is the basis of the study and the beginning of the intervention. Then, a treatment proposal is made and the feasibility of the process is assessed and, if appropriate, the pieces are intervened. Finally, when the coins have been intervened and the appropriate preventive conservation measures have been taken,
the numismatic study is carried out.
