Archaeological study and restoration of late medieval spurs in Asturias

The aim of this article is to thoroughly study the historical and archaeological context of two examples of medieval spurs, excavated in the archaeological site of the monastery of Corias (Cangas del Narcea), located in Asturias, Spain. The application of Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM?EDS) and Energy Dispersive Micro X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry (?-ED-XRF) techniques allowed the identification of the gilding technique and served to expand the knowledge of the decoration of this type of spurs during the Middle Ages in the north of Spain. These insights, together with the burial characteristics, let us infer certain hypotheses on the social context of the pieces and their historical significance.
The restoration methodology applied during the conservation treatment at the Archaeological Museum of Asturias, specifically designed to preserve the gold remains on the surface of the metal until the scientific analyses, is also presented.
