Abstract:

At the beginning, the aim of this research was to compare two Indian films directed by Mehboob Khan – Aan (1953) and Mother India (1957) – considering their original versions and the ones showed in Spain theatres during the 1950s decade. In both cases, the length of these films was reduced considerably in order to be released in Spain. In spite of the original purpose of this research, there was no enough material for the comparative study. For this reason, eventually the research takes only Mother India as a case study and it focuses on how the film was distributed, on its exhibition in diverse Spanish theatres, and on the narrative and political reasons that reduced into a half the film’s original length.

Keywords: Bollywood, multiversions, exhibition, film archives, reception, Spain, Mother India, Mehboob Khanm.
