Se puede observar que desde los años 50 este país logró una fuerte expansión de esta educación. Asimismo, en comparación con otros países latinoamericanos, esta nación declaró la educación secundaria como obligatoria en una fecha temprana (1973).Distintos factores sociales, históricos, culturales y hasta las crisis económicas intervinieron como impulso para llegar a una mayor y mejor educación secundaria. Con la reforma de la educación media en 1996, hubo un incremento significativo en el tiempo que los jóvenes debían acudir a la escuela. Un elemento importante de esta evolución es la capacitación del profesorado y para ello, a mediados de la década de los 90, se crearon los Centros Regionales de Profesores. Por último, el autor finaliza con importantes conclusiones que muestran los logros y lo que aún queda por hacer.</p><p>Descriptores: educación secundaria - Uruguay - reforma educativa</p><p> </p><p><strong>The evolution of secondary education in Uruguay</strong></p><p>This article presents in a clear and very detailed way the evolution that the secondary education in Uruguay has suffered. It is possible to observe that this country achieved a strong expansion of this education since the 50’s. Likewise, in comparison with other Latin-American countries, this nation declared the secondary education as an obligatory one, in an early date (1973) .Diverse social, historical, and cultural factors, and even economic crises intervened as an impulse to achieve a larger and better secondary education. With the reform of the secondary education in 1996, there was a significant increase in the time that the students had to come to school. An important element of this evolution is the training of the professorship, and for this purpose, in the middle of the decade of the 90’s, the Teachers’ Regional Centers were created. Finally, the author finishes with important conclusions that show the achievements and what is still pending on doing.</p><p>Keywords: secondary education - Uruguay - educational reform</p>}, number={1}, journal={REICE.
