Resumen
This paper draws attention to some of the problems inherent in the art-historical
convention of classifying artists in terms of major and minor masters. It takes as an
example the Sevillian “school” of painters of the seventeenth century, headed by
Francisco de Zurbarán and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. It questions the limitations of
this model as an explanation of the realities of the production and consumption of
painting in the period.
KEY WORDS: Zurbarán, Murillo, Sevillian school, major and minor masters
