Resumen
En este artículo se examina el funcionamiento del correo en España durante el siglo XVII, concretamente el uso que de él hace D. Luis Méndez de Haro al negociar con el cardenal Mazarino, en la frontera pirenaica, el tratado de paz de 1659. Además de enumerar los despachos que el valido prepara durante los cinco meses que está ausente de la corte, se señala su coste y, siempre que ha sido posible, el contenido de los mismos, así como la identidad de los destinatarios. Por último, se hace una valoración del servicio que prestan los correos reales y ordinarios durante la conferencia de paz y de su contribución al resultado de las negociaciones realizadas entre Haro y el cardenal.

This article examines the functioning of the postal service in seventeenth-century Spain, specifically the way it is used by D. Luis Méndez de Haro as he negotiates the peace treaty of 1659 with Cardinal Jules Mazarin along the border between Spain and France. In addition to listing the dispatches the favourite prepares during the five months he is absent from court, precise information is given of their cost. Where possible, the addressee is identified and a summary of the dispatch supplied. Finally, consideration is given to the effectiveness of the postal service -both public and royal-during the peace conference, as well as to the contribution it makes to the final outcome of the negotiations.
