ABSTRACT

The aim of this work is the development of a workshop about cave art, for children in Pre-school Education (with proper support), and Primary Education (6 to 12 years-old). It is structured with a first part in which the context where the chosen paintings were done is explained, along with some of the techniques and materials used in their making, and the timeframe parameters when they were produced. The second part is devoted to the explanation and hands-on approach on everything previously explained, through a workshop with several activities. The chosen paintings belong to the Upper Paleolithic, specifically to the Solutrean culture, and mainly the Magdalenian one. The geographical area is limited to the Cantabrian corniche, and to three caves or group of caves (Tito Bustillo, Monte Castillo and Altamira). Paintings are, in all instances, black and red figurative performances of animals. The workshop includes the following activities: Theoretical introduction by means of panels, presentations or story-tellers; Work area preparation, i.e. the cave, with “construction” of the walls, and some lighting; colour fabrication, pigment mixing, binder, etc.; and finally, the animal paintings execution, either with templates or free style, upon the stone walls previously erected.

Keywords: Magdalenian, Tito Bustillo, Monte Castillo, Altamira, cave art, children’s workshop, controlled experiments.
