Abstract

This paper presents the experience of the municipality of Cheran, Mexico, a Purépecha ethnic community that has won municipal autonomy through of a movement of insubordination against the State and self- defense against the criminal organizations that exploited their forests. We relate these events to present a critique of the traditional concept of democracy and the corruption of a State system.
